We suggest that all homeowners refer to a professional landscaper to install or prep the area where they want to lay sod. If you would like to do it on your own, there are a few steps you should take to ensure a suitable surface that will facilitate optimal root growth and drainage.
1. (optional) Kill the current grass and weeds in the area where you are planning to lay your sod. You can do this by applying 2-3 applications of glyphosate in the weeks prior to installing sod. Glyphosate can be bought at your local garden or farm supply center. Remember, the label is the law, and must be obeyed.
2. Work up your soil. This can be done with a small hand-held tiller or larger machinery such as a lawn or garden tractor and tiller. The depth of aggravated soil should be at least 2-3 inches.
3. Remove any rock or gravel from your soil. If desired, topsoil may be added at this time. Be aware that many screened topsoils may have weed seed that will germinate with time. A dense layer of sod is your best defense against this.
4. Rake out any imperfections in soil height to make an even surface to lay your sod on. This will allow proper drainage and a smooth surface to mow.
5. Lay out your sod. It is best to stagger the rolls in a horizontal fashion compared to your grade or elevation. After you have made sure the rolls are tight without gaps in between the rolls, cut corners with shovel or a machete.
